This panel explores how knowledge is produced through the experience of forced migration. We will focus on how women refugees capture their experience of displacement, reinvent homes and lives, recontextualize their identities, and utilize art—from writing to filmmaking—as a tool for surviving, resisting, and community making. Looking at the refugee discourse from a feminist perspective, particularly through the lens of “feminist refugee epistemology” (Espiritu and Duong), this panel will discuss refugee women writers and artists as producers of knowledge. What stories do women tell, and for whom? How do they respond to the dominant knowledge about refugees, including narratives that are centered on refugees as victims or threats? What does it mean to listen to the knowledge produced by refugees in a feminist way?
